In 2013 my wife and I found out she was pregnant. Soon after we learned we were having a boy. Like most parents, we were praying for a healthy baby regardless of boy or girl. But to say I didn't dream of having a boy one day and getting him in the woods would be a lie. The day we found out, the dream begin. Visions of taking my son to a deer stand and teaching him everything my Father, brother and grandfather taught me was something I could not get out of my head. The excitement I had when I took my first deer, like many, was something I will never forget. I dreamed of the day I would be able to experience that with him. This past November, that dream came true! My 9 year old son has spent the last couple of years being my sidekick for many hunts. This day, I was his sidekick. This day, we were hunting with the ***** -30. This gun is the first gun that me and All my brothers and nephews have used to shoot our first deer. There was no question, it would be the gun we used for my sons first deer. We woke up early, he was excited and barely sleep. Truth be told, I may have not slept at all. We got in the stand right before daylight and jumped a few deer on the way in. I was a little disappointed in pushing deer out early, but when hunting the hill country of Texas, you always feel like there are more to come. It did not take long for more deer to funnel in to our set up. A mature doe made her way within 150 yards. We got the gun up, but waited patiently for her to move in closer. Once she got within 100 yards he placed the gun up to his shoulder and begin to find her in the scope. Just like my father, brother and grandfather had done, I reminded him "hold the gun tight to your shoulder." "Control your breathing". "Squeeze don't pull". The doe turned broad side right at 75 yards and he took his shot. Perfect shot, right behind the shoulder. She ran 30 yards..... she stopped... she fell. The "Buck Fever" kicked In immediately! He had a grin from ear to ear! The 9 year dream of a father had finally come true! This is a day I will certainly never forget and I am sure he won't either!
